9/23/02Yesterday the Jackie Greene Band performed its first major gig opening the Riverbank Festival in Sacramento. I was so focused on the job at hand that I neglected to pay any heed to the fact that the temperature onstage at 5pm was to be in excess of 100 degrees and wore a black tee-shirt... (Mental note to self: Always check for stuff like that in the future.) Dave Alvin had to be given directions to the nearest clothing store to get a white shirt to replace his trusty leather jacket. Fashion is good, survival even better! See, the promoter had put together a beautiful stage with first class sound & lights but neglected a canopy for shade. It was my privilege to help Rick Estrin get past the security guard to go backstage to sit-in on harmonica with Mr. Alvin & The Guilty Men. Night fell as these venerable rockers closed their fine set. With the full moon shining on the Sacramento River and the pyramid building decorating the other side of the park, the Blind Boys of Alabama took the stage and proceeded to dazzle and delight the crowd with their unique and powerful gospel sound. If you ever get a chance to see these men in person, do yourself a favor: go!
Peace,Hence
